UPDATE: A new date has been set for the ride because of heavy expected rains on Saturday Oct. 1. Ride will move to Sunday Oct. 2.
Two local motorcycle clubs are joining forces to raise money for Pennsylvania's wounded veterans through a 115-mile charity ride and poker run on Saturday Oct. 1.
The third annual charity ride starts in Camp Hill and features four stops, including a pit stop at the VA Hospital in Lebanon to eat lunch with veterans and escort them to an onsite car show. Motorcycles from the charity ride will be featured in the show.
The veterans look forward to the rumble of the arriving motorcycles, said Larry Fortin, one of the organizers. Riders also get the chance to thank the veterans for their sacrifice.
Proceeds from the event benefit the local Wounded Warriors group, which is complementary but different from the national Wounded Warrior Project.
The local group focuses on helping military veterans through their long recovery process by providing emergency assistance with housing, medical, utilities, transportation and other expenses. The group pays directly to landlords, vendors and creditors, according to their website.
Last year's motorcycle ride raised more than $2,000 for the charity.
The ride begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic at 25 N. 32nd Street Camp Hill, where riders will draw their first poker card.
Riders will then head to the Iron Valley Harley-Davidson dealership in Lebanon, PA before eating lunch with 50 members of the long-term care unit at the VA Hospital in Lebanon. The motorcyclists will then ride to the Lancaster Harley-Davidson dealership with the final destination of the Quaker Steak and Lube in Mechanicsburg.
The winning poker hand gets a $200 prize.
Interested riders can sign up on a website created by the organizing motorcycle groups, Ride4Life and LanCo. Entry fees are $25 per rider and $11 per passenger. Riders who can't participate can still donate to the event through the website.
