Suicide Prevention Becomes a Priority in Pennsylvania
September 22, 2014
According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1700 people take their own lives in Pennsylvania every year.
On Pennsylvania’s Suicide Prevention Awareness Day, leaders are providing training for people to understand the causes and signs of depression. Officials with the Department of Public Welfare say almost 3 adults die by suicide each day in the state. In addition, for every suicide, there are 25 non-fatal attempts. DPW Secretary, Beverly Mackereth says successful prevention methods like training session are necessary.
Mackereth says, “Many people within their life come into contact with others who are depressed, who feel there’s no reason to live, feel a sense of despair and don’t know what to do. So this is a basic training that gives people tools to help those individuals.”
